This is a tobacco for those who not only like Latakia, but love the stuff and in high volumes too. This jet black flake is made up from Virginia and Cypriot Latakia, no other Orientals needed. The tobaccos is pressed and cooked, resulting in a jet black plug (we also sell this as plug). The cooking process removes the hot and bitey nature of Virginia, while still retaining some of the natural sweetness. To look at smell you would think was a slab of compressed Latakia and to be honest you are not far off.
The flakes are cut to the usual Gawith Hoggarth size and break down with ease. Thanks to the cool texture of Latakia, this tobacco will still be reasonably cool to smoke if broken down finely. We find its best folded into the pipe, it will require a few relights, but once you have it going. Well we have never smoked a tobacco which produces that volume of smoke, thick and delicious smoke. The draw is a dirty, smoky, earthy texture which has underlying hints of woods, spices, leather and is surprisingly complex for its makeup. The Virignias sweetness is there carrying the flavours along, this does fade throughout the bowl and is replaced with a pepperiness.
The smoke might not be overly strong in regards to the nicotine, but the flavour more than makes up for that. Not one with a pleasing room note for none latakia or smokehouse fans, we find its best smoked outside on a cool or damp evening. If you love your latakia and like a dirty, earthy smoke this is ideal and one of Glynns go to blends and he can’t get enough of the stuff (hence the Latakia plus!)
