1792 Flake 10g

Another one of iconic flakes from Samuel Gawith, 1792 is steamed flake with a top dressing of Tonquin. High grade dark fired Tanzanian leaf is hand stripped and steamed. The leafs are cold pressed in 12" blocks for a few hours, this holds the "Cake" together for the next stage. The cakes are loaded into a steam press and cooked for about 3 more hours, the tobacco is left cool and rest. After this sort aging period the tobacco is given a top dressing of Tonquin, before being cut ready to smoke.

The resulting tobacco is rich, with a earthy, leather flavour that is velvety smooth with a sweet side thanks to the added Tonquin. Think of this as a sweet treat for the lovers of a dark and strong Virginia & Kentucky type tobaccos. Like a premium quality Nicaraguan cigar with the Maduro wrapper, all the power included. This is a very strong tobacco and not for everyone, those new to the pipe, should start a little lighter.

Bothty Flake 10g

When we first heard about this tobacco from our friend Sgt Matron at the Kearvaig Pipe Club, we couldn’t wait to try it. During the pipe show we was so busy and never managed to try any, but eventually we got to try some. The tobacco started out with a conversation between Sgt Matron and Bob Gregory (Samuel Gawiths), the idea was a tobacco that brought the spirit of the traditional both. A blend of dark Virginias with a little latakia and of course some scotch. The musky, smoky flavours of the tobacco are given a spicy side thanks to the whisky. While many comparisons may be carried out with Navy flake, to use it seems a different balance of the tobaccos and not just the spirit (Navy Flake is topped with Rum).

Sam's Flake 10g

An oriental flake with the addition of very gentle Lakeland topping. Virginias and Turkish are blended and pressed and baked in a oven. This not only melds the different tobacco flavour profile, it also cools down the burn rate. The tobacco given a very light Tonquin topping, this just adds a little extra, rather than pungent levels used in 1792/Cob.

From the tin this dark brown and tan have the distinct Samuel Gawith aroma with the Virginia’s and the subtle spiciness of the Izmir/Turkish. The tobacco is best rubbed out fine or left to dry a little and folded into the bowl. From the word go you are greeted with the classic Virignia flavours from Samuel Gawith, a sweet and grassy flavour with a nutty/woody undertone. The Turkish comes to life the further you get down the bowl, adding a nice sour and gentle spice to flavours. All the while the delicate Tonquin adds a little extra sweetness and rounds off the flavour. A very light tobacco in both its flavours and strength, should be smoked slowly and carefully.

A good change of pace form the usual Lakeland blends of Virginias and/or Burley. Also a great introduction to the style, albeit a little subdued *wink*
