The idea of Navy flakes harks back to the early colonial days of the tobacco world. When tobacco was brought back from the American colonies it was soaked in Rum to keep the tobacco from drying out. This simple casing/flavouring has been used ever since to add a little extra to simple blends. While most current Navy Flakes are comprised of only Virginia’s, this offering from Samuel Gawith make use of a little Latakia.
As with all Samuel Gawith tobaccos, the use of high quality Virginia shows all the way though this delicious flake. From the tin you are greeted with a brown and black flake, medium in thickness. From the initial light you are rewarded with a grassy, tangy Virginia taste, with the rum bringing a little sweetness while the Latakia making a creamy and smooth smoke.
