A classic Virginia and Burley blend from Samuel Gawith, with the addition of a little added “essence”. We cannot get a straight answer out of the factory to what exactly the topping is, as with most blenders “Secrets are secrets for a reason”.
As soon as you open the tin, you are greeted with golden and brown flakes, cut thick as you would expect from Samuel Gawith. The aroma that wafts up is a mixture of the natural Virginia aromas Samuel Gawith is famed for, with a slight nutty hint of their Burley (which we use frequently in our blends). As for the topping, its an odd one, you get a little citrus, slight (Grousemoor-like) tropical fruits and deeper, more earthy twang.
Unlike many other SG flakes, this requires very little drying and (like many English) tobaccos does smoke well a little moist. The flakes require a little rubbing out due to the thickness, but takes a light very well. Can sometimes require a few touch lights, depending on how you pack it. Once you have this beauty burning the smoke is cool, smooth and very creamy. The additional toppings add only a little to the flavour profile, but make for a very pleasant room note.
While this is not up there with the likes of Full Virignia Flake, it still carries a little punch and that’s thanks to the Burley. If you are looking for a sweet smelling tobacco to smoke round family and friends, but don’t want to sacrifice a real tobacco taste. Then this is a must try for you.
